Congratulations Adro on your run and your graduation!

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Adro set himself a goal  not too long ago and it was to be able to run 1 kilometre in 4 minutes. This meant that he had to get his running speed to 12 km/hr for that 4 minutes. You may remember that when he left The Biggest Loser house to train at home he couldn't even run for 4 minutes without stopping. And by the time he reached the finale he was able to average 9km/hr for 10km.

Well yesterday I recieved a text message from him telling me he'd done it. You could imagine how excited he must have been too. After so many years of being unfit, to now be described as 'athletic' must be a real buzz!

But the attainment of this goal coincided with the achievement of a much bigger goal. Yesterday Adro graduated from his Certificate IV in Fitness course which means he is now a qualified personal trainer!

So Adro, well done on the run and well done on the graduation!

Chris Garling - The Biggest Loser 2007

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Well I haven't got around to posting about my experience trainng Chris Garling yet so I thought I'd just pop in for a very brief outline.

Chris started training out of the house with 'The Commando' (Steve Willis). Those 8 weeks not only helped Chris drop about 30kg but also set him up mentally for his time in the house.

Once in the house he was training with Shannan Ponton. Being in the house wasn't that great for Chris psychologically as he was basically on his own. This ended up being a strength for him and over those 8 weeks he dropped another 30kg. He was now leading the final 3 but he didn't have much left to lose and Marty Barrett did!

This is when I met him. I hadn't seen him on TV but when he told me of his losses I was blown away. I thought that the next 7 weeks would be pretty easy as he only had another 10kg that he could lose. But nothing could be further from the truth. On coming out of the house Chris, like most people, found it hard to adapt back into normal life and soon found himself at 97kg. Our training sessions were great but outside of those he was struggling. His weight constantly fluctuated between 89kg and 97kg due to days off training and night time binges.

The final 2 weeks were paramount so we removed him from his home environment. This did the trick and he never looked back!

CBC News: Weight training effective at reversing damage due to aging in muscles, even for seniors

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

This comprehensive CBC web report chronicles “a study conducted by Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky, director of the neuromuscular and neurometabolic clinic at McMaster University in Hamilton and Simon Melov of the Buck Institute for Age Research in Novato, Calif., wherein they compared tissue samples from 25 healthy older men and women who did six months of weight training and a similar group of 26 younger people.”

“Exercise was linked to a reversal back to levels similar to those of younger adults.”

“Melov said the researchers were surprised at the extent of the results in humans.

‘The fact that their 'genetic fingerprints' so dramatically reversed course gives credence to the value of exercise, not only as a means of improving health, but of reversing the aging process itself, which is an additional incentive to exercise as you get older.’"

This study shows that it is never too late to start an exercise program.  Check with your doctor if you are starting from scratch.

There is no way to reverse the aging process, but a regular exercise program may be the closest thing there is.
