Recycled Water in Sydney

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

I think it's quite funny that people throughout Sydney (and Australia for that matter) are quite reluctant to use recycled water. London, and other European cities have been using it for years. I have absolutely no doubt that the recycled water will taste much better than the stuff we've got now!

I know the real problem is that our politicians have let us down by not harvesting run-off water from our streets, or building better catchment dams. This really annoys me because I live in an area that gets loads of rain, but we have Level 4 water restrictions (expecting Level 5 within weeks!).

I applaude Peter Beattie for showing true leadership and getting on with the job. Now, Mr Iemma??????

8 Second Exercise Revolution

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

In today's Daily Telegraph scientists have announced a revolution in exercising for weight loss: The 8 Second Interval Program!

Well it's actually not too revolutionary because informed trainers have been using interval training to achieve successful weight loss results for their clients for years.

They mention in the above article that longer intervals are not as effective for overweight people. Of course it doesn't! How can you expect someone who is unfit to run for a minute or 2, have a recovery, then do it another 10 times.

This 'revolution' in reality is just a formal announcement of the fact that if you're unfit, do shorter intervals!

There, you've been told! Big Smile

A Bonding Run With My Wife

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Hi guys,

It doesn't happen too often but recently my wife and I went on a run together and it was a great experience. She doesn't usually like running with me because she says I run too fast but I've had her on a running program for the past 8 weeks and she's been progressing well. But even she didn't realise how much she had improved until this run.

We ran for 60 minutes she didn't need to stop at all. In fact, she was suprised at how easy she did it. We didn't go fast, but we did run in Mt Colah which is a very 'hilly' suburb.

Well done Carol!

Study bombshell: Statins linked to Parkinson’s

Monday, January 15th, 2007

This Daily Mall article sounds a very discordant note by indicating that some researchers feel that there may be a link between the widely prescribed and very effective cholesterol fighting drugs called statins and Parkinson’s disease.  If true, this would be a major bombshell in the medical community because statins are now felt to be one the most significant pharma advances of the last century.  Statins lower cholesterol and fight heart disease and strokes.

The study found that people with very low LDL (low density lypo-proteins) are three times more likely to develop Parkinson’s.  Statins directly lower LDL (also called “bad” cholesterol.)

According to the article, most medical experts feel that it is entirely too early to draw any conclusions from this study and that statins are proven life savers whose should not be discontinued based on this very preliminary study.

See our earlier post on the same subject, based on a NYT article here.

Adro’s DVD is done!

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

I've been flat out getting it finished in time for The Biggest Loser Australia 2, and now it's pretty much ready to go. I just want to make a few small alterations.

We're pretty excited about this because there's nothing like it on the market (yet!).
